History[]

In 184, the Yellow Turbans rebelled against the Han Dynasty following years of poverty and corruption. Under Zhang Jiao, who was in charge of several soldiers, the rebellion was longer than expected. Zhang Jiao died of illness and his supporters were either killed or expelled. Some bandits such as Ou Xing rebelled in the later stages of the 180s, but were crushed by the Ten Eunuchs, who, under Zhang Rang, took control of the Han court. Emperor Ling died in 189 and was succeeded by the Prince of Hongnong. Dong Zhuo seized power in the court and soon an Alliance against Dong Zhuo was formed by Cao Cao and other regional lords. The Confederation overthrew the ruler, who had Shao poisoned. In 191, the same year that he was overthrown, he took Liu Xie to Chang'an and installed him as emperor. The emperor was taken into custody of Cao Cao following the assassination of Dong Zhuo by Wang Yun and Lu Bu, and was imprisoned in the capital city of Xuchang. In 220, after Cao Cao died and the Kingdom of Wei took control of the north, Cao Pi deposed the emperor Xian and the Han Dynasty was divided officially into three kingdoms, giving the name to the age of civil strife.
