Biography[]

Huang Zu was from a rich, noble family who were the vassals of the mighty Liu Clan of Jing Province. In 184, Huang Zu aided in the suppression of the Yellow Turban Rebellion as a Han commander. After the rebellion ended, he joined the forces of Liu Biao and defended Jing from the invasion of Sun Jian some seven years later. At the Battle of Fan Kou, he was crushed by the forces of Sun Jian and Huang Gai. This humiliation earned him the scorn of Liu Biao, and deserted his ranks. In 203, a determined Sun Quan, the son of Sun Jian, set out to avenge his father's death at the hands of Liu Biao, invading Jiangxia Commandery. At Xiakou, Huang Zu flaunted his cowardly character by fleeing on a capital ship while Gan Ning and Su Fei were left behind for capture, and eventually, defection. In 208, Sun Quan invaded yet again, with the two generals on his side. Huang Zu clung to his vast navy for support and hope for victory, but all of his warships were sunken in fire attacks, and he tried to flee. However, Gan Ning fitted an arrow into his famed bow and flung it right at the back of a fleeing Huang Zu, killing his former master.
