Zhang Yi was born in Wuyang Commandery and a descendant of Zhang Liang, hero of the Western Han Empire. Yi served under Liu Zhang against Liu Bei's invasion in 211 but he joined Shu after the defeat of Liu Zhang. From then on, he served under Zhuge Liang during his northern expeditions against Wei. Shortly after the expeditions began, Zhuge died on the battlefield of Wu Zhang. And so, he served in Jiang Wei's Northern Expeditions against the same foe.
