Biography[]

Zhao Yun of Changshan was born in 169 AD, originally a servant of Yuan Shao. Under Yuan Shao, he served in the Yellow Turban Campaign and took part in the victory over Zhang Jiao's Yellow Turbans in Ji Province in 180 AD. However, after the end of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he fought for Gongsun Zan instead of Yuan Shao, as he felt that Yuan Shao was too concerned with the status of his family rather than the people. Zhao Yun was introduced to General Liu Bei in the Dong Zhuo Campaign of 189-192 AD, and the two developed a mutual friendship. After serving in the Battle of Jieqiao in 191 AD, he stopped fighting for Gongsun Zan and instead fought for Liu Bei, who was virtuous and a man that he could follow.

Under Liu Bei, he served in the fight against Cao Cao at Xu Province in 193 AD and also rescued him from Yuan Shao and Cao Cao's armies at the Battle of Guan Du in 200 AD when he was accused of being a traitor when Yuan Shao found out that his sworn brother, Guan Yu, had killed his prized warriors Yan Liang and Wen Chou. Zhao Yun confirmed his service to Liu Bei by saving him at the Battle of Ru Nan later that year.

In 208 AD, Zhao Yun took part in the war against Cao Cao, responsible for the victory over Xiahou Dun at the Battle of Bo Wan Po, and later that year, he galloped behind enemy lines at the Battle of Chang Ban just to rescue Liu Bei's infant son, and brought him back safe to his father. Liu Bei praised his courage and inspiration to his army, and he fought at the Battle of Chi Bi in winter 208 AD-early 209 AD. Shortly after Chibi, he saved Liu Bei's life again, killing Xing Daorong, a warrior of Liu Du who had tried to slay Liu Bei in the campaign for Jing; he proceeded to capture Guiyang from Zhao Fan.

In 214 AD, Zhao Yun and Huang Zhong participated in the campaign for Cheng Du, where Liu Bei's Army secured him sizeable domains in Yi Province. Zhao Yun rose to become of the "Five Tiger Generals" of Shu during the capture of Hanzhong from Cao Cao's Army in the battles of Hanzhong and Mt. Dingjun in 219 AD. Both generals fought at the Battle of Yi Ling, a military expedition that was advised against by Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang; it resulted in Huang Zhong and Zhang Fei's deaths.

After the death of Liu Bei a year after Yiling, in 223 AD, Zhao Yun served as a veteran general under Zhuge Liang's rule over Shu, taking part in the Nanman Campaign and the Northern Expeditions. He was famous for killing Han De and his sons in the Battle of Tian Shui in 228 AD, in a duel that lasted two minutes. Zhao Yun fell ill and died soon after this triumph in Hanzhong, the last of the Five Tigers to die, and the only one to die peacefully.
